      Zebra Plants can come inside if you get temperatures below freezing in the winter. They grow well on window sills and need little to no water in winter. Only water if the soil is completely dry and the leaves feel flexible.

      Hmm I wonder if they meant perlite? Perlite aerates the soil (which makes it more antifungal) while vermiculite keeps soil moist for longer. So perlite is definitely the way to go for succulents.

    • @Mountaincrestgardens

      You can! Jade plants are very flexible and resilient, so you'll find people growing them indoors with everything ranging from Bonsai Jack Gritty mix to standard potting soil. Just be sure to adjust your watering frequency and only water after the soil is completely dry. With Bonsai Jack that will be more often, while a less gritty mix will need less frequent water.

We're not too fussed on how folks pronounced plant names, but Latin names are fun to learn about! I'm trying to figure out if I take my plants out of the little containers to water. Or do they need to grab hold of their containers. If so do I soak whole container or just mist only.

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens 13 дней назад

      Air Plants should not be left sitting in water for more than an hour or two,. So depending on your setup and if you water by soaking/dunking or misting, you'll likely want to remove them from the containers to soak them or mist them without creating a pool in the containers. Some very mature Air Plants can grab hold of their containers, but they do not need to to be healthy. Hope that helps!

    Hi, this is my first time to your site. I just received some small Lithops in the mail from another company. They are not in pots so I planted them and since they barely have any roots how often do I water them? Thank you

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens 20 дней назад

      Great question! You're still going to want to follow the advice in this video: plant in a gritty, well-draining soil and a pot with a drainage hole. Keep them in a sunny spot. Thoroughly drench the soil then do not water again until the soil is fully dry and the tops of the leaves are wrinkled and sunken. No water when they're splitting or blooming. Finger's crossed you have some good roots, because this is an extra tricky plant to re-root.

  • @emoji_page
    @emoji_page 23 дня назад

    I've had success growing lithops by purchasing them from a grower directly. I've had good success watering them like I water my other plants. As long as the water can drain out of the pot and you allow the soil to dry a little. Plants including cactus and lithops grow faster and healthier if they sre watered faithfully in well drained soil & pot. No roots should ever sit in water. Short of that, I've found plants and cactus respond favorably to being watered faithfully watering them as soon as the soil is dry. I've had better growing success buying lithops from people who grow them. (Buying them online mostly.) Retail stores tend to deal almost exclusively with lithop carcasses. If a lithops expands or explodes when you lightly water or mist it, this indicates that the plant was already deceased when you purchased it. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

    I could use help on another topic. I have a a few succulents outside in a small table greenhouse to protect it from rain. A type of haworthia cuttings and pieces of bunny ear cactus. My plan is to experiment how cold hardy succulents can be. Even the haworthia already survived -1 Degrees C. for one night even though they where not already in the greenhouse at the end of April. Plus two weeks of rain with night temperatures under 10 degrees which killed 2 of my 4 Bunnyear cactus cuttings due to rootrot.2 Haworthia cuttings and 2 Bunnyearcactus cuttings are still fine. My theory is that the haworthia can handle more rain while the bunnyearcactus takes more cold. My plan is to keep the mini greenhouse with the cuttings outside over the year and see if one of them survives if I keep them away from the rain. Do you might have any tips on how to insulate such an arrangement to keep it just a few degress warmer over winter. I life in germany and the winters here normally dont go much under -10 degrees celcius or 14 degrees fahrenheit

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens 26 дней назад

      Fantastic experiments! We totally agree. We've seen succulents tolerate temperatures well below their hardiness rating. Hardiness ratings have to be on the conservative side, since so many factors determine an individual plant's cold tolerance. For instance, older plants with more established roots tend to survive frost better. As do plants that have been kept dry through winter. Restricted watering and very gritty, well-draining soil will be key here. And getting them to grow as many roots as possible before winter. You can find more of our tips for insulating succulents here: mountaincrestgardens.com/faqs-help/?faq_page=/en-US/can-i-grow-succulents-rated-for-zones-higher-than-my-own-43578

    Re: the square white pot with gritty soil mix. Are you saying not to use succulent/cactus mix?

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens Месяц назад

      Most bagged mixes at big garden centers labeled "cactus/succulent soil" are unfortunately not actually gritty and well-draining enough for succulents. A good rule of thumb for these organic-heavy mixes is to combine them with an equal volume of mineral grit, e.g. pumice, perlite, or coarse sand.

  • @Abcd-jz4gp
    @Abcd-jz4gp Месяц назад

    Re: the Zebra on your left. I notice you have this plant in a deep container that is glazed pottery. I would be afraid the soil would not dry out fast enough after a soak (for those 2 reasons). Correct? Incorrect? Partially correct? I really hate myself for experimenting with other types of containers rather than tried-and-true terra cotta.

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens Месяц назад

      All valid to wonder about! We find that as long as a pot has a drainage hole and you're using a gritty, rapidly draining soil, glazed ceramic is totally great for succulents. Everything is a balance of soil, water, and environmental conditions, so worth experimenting and seeing what works for you. And you're right too big a pot can hold a large volume of water and take a while to dry out, so that might be a good place to compensate with grittier soil and/or a bigger, "thirstier" succulent.

  • @Abcd-jz4gp
    @Abcd-jz4gp Месяц назад

    After you do a soak, how long should the soil stay wet? Successful watering is also related to size of pot, my own environment, and the soil I am using, right? ( I received an order from your company. I texted you with a question.)

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens Месяц назад

      Great question! You're looking for a gritty, well-draining soil that dries out within about 2-4 days of getting fully drenched with water. And yes, those variables and more (season, type and age of plant) affect how often you'll water. That's why it's better to water in response to signs of thirst, rather than on a set schedule.

    Can they handle hot humid weather?

      With humidity, you'll wan to give them even better drainage and less frequent water to mitigate rot. Gritty soil and raised berms/beds are key!

    I wish I watched this video years ago when I tried and failed growing these little gems. I just got back from my local Home Depot and they had a whole tray of lithops, which I had only found at specialty succulent nurseries. And they were only $3.99 for the 2" pots (many had 2 plants in them as well). WOOO HOO. Thank you for educating me on how to properly pot and water them. Now I clearly know my mistakes. I had way too much potting soil mixed with the rocks/perlite. And of course I was watering them too often. I live in San Diego and my succulents love my north facing patio since it gets indirect sun year round. I'm very confident my plants will look like yours at the nursery and they won't croak.

      Yay so glad you're giving them another shot! Sounds like you've got a great setup for them!
